Overview

Het Pekelmeer. 23/05/80; Bonaire; 400 ha; 12°02'N 068°19'W. A shallow seawater lagoon located between a ridge of recrystalized coral debris (beach rock) and a commercial saltworks, linked to the open sea by an artificial channel. Sparsely vegetated, the site provides a flamingo nesting sanctuary and supports one of the most important nesting colonies of Phoenicopterus ruber ruber in the Caribbean (1,000 pairs). It serves as an important feeding area for Pelecanidae, Ardeidae (herons, bitterns, etc.), and various migratory shorebirds which breed in North America. Ramsar site no. 200.
